What is Freedom Session?
Freedom Session is a 20-week, intensive healing-discipleship journey that uncovers the roots of pain in our lives and invites Jesus Christ to heal those areas of our hearts. It offers us an opportunity to examine our life and discover distorted truths that have prevented us from living an abundant life as in John 10:10 “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.”
Freedom Session deals with real issues—broken marriages, woundedness and abuse, depression, anger, fear and addiction. Early in Freedom Session, we identify our “drugs of choice”– things or behaviors we run to when life gets hard so that we can escape the pain in our lives. Some choose food, affirmation of others, alcohol, work, performance, TV, hobbies, and so on.
The Bible teaches us that anything we choose over God runs the risk of becoming an idol. Freedom Session gives us specific tools to identify these idols and choose a healthier way–God’s way to deal with pain or conflict. Beneath these symptoms, you will find a wounded and empty heart, looking for hope and meaning. As Jesus begins to heal the heart, the unhealthy and destructive ways we used to escape the pain in our lives become less and less attractive. Shame loses its grip on our lives and the lies that controlled us are replaced by God’s truth.
Who is Freedom Session for?
Freedom Session is for anyone, really. Freedom Session has been a blessing to singles, married couples, young adults, middle aged and seniors. Freedom Session is for anyone serious about growing into greater Christ-likeness. Check out the testimony videos below!
Freedom Session Promotes Discipleship
Discipleship involves leading an examined life. “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24
It is easy to become comfortable with who we are, but living an examined life invites God to reveal issues He wants to address so we can grow and further reflect the character and life of Christ. Freedom Session encourages us to look honestly at how we deal with the challenges and troubles in life. It asks us to take look into our past experiences, our strengths and our weaknesses, and challenges us to replace character defects with the character of God.
Freedom Session Promotes Healing
The authors of Freedom Session have coined the phrase “healing-discipleship” to reflect their belief that emotional and relational healing should be considered a normative part of every Christian’s discipleship journey. Many of us need healing from past experiences or relationships and this program focuses on it and helps us address it.
Once we’ve completed Freedom Session, we move on to embrace God’s calling upon our lives and purposes for which we’ve been created. This doesn’t mean we’ve “arrived,” are totally “healed” or no longer vulnerable to our old ways of living. Freedom Sessions makes us aware and gives us tools and strategies to help us to continually and intentionally identify when we return to old ways or behaviour or thinking and help us back on track.
Freedom Session runs on a small-group video format. The group meets every week, watches the short teaching video, participates in small group discussions and follows up with weekly homework assignments.
God used my participation in Freedom Session to apply the gospel to my heart, to free me from the guilt and shame I felt over the many mistakes in my life. God had forgiven me, but I had not forgiven myself and the guilt I carried around impeded my service for Him. I learned to forgive myself through this program and am living a life more abundantly with more peace than I could have ever imagined. Through this program, I discovered some distorted truths that had influenced me in making some very poor decisions and subsequent mistakes in my life. I am no longer believing these distorted truths and believe that I am now better able to make decisions based on His Will and His truth. In its simplest form, Freedom Session has helped me rewrite my life story as a part of Christ’s redemptive story with a new and God-inspired ending.
One way to describe the goal of Freedom Session is to experience this Jesus-centred version of the Serenity Prayer:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
Taking as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with you forever in the next.
